A series following the lives of four female friends in in New York City. Though they are all career women, their respective professional lives and outlook in life tends to be very different. Carrie Bradshaw is a newspaper columnist and a fashion enthusiast. Her column regularly offers commentary on modern relationships, dating, and friendship, and gains for her a reputation as a celebrity in her own right. Carrie has a habit of overspending on designer shoes, experiencing significant financial strain at various points. She maintains an on-again-off-again romantic relationship with the businessman "Mr. Big" (his nickname) for most of the series. Charlotte York is an art gallery executive, art dealer, and art historian who had a privileged upbringing in Connecticut. She tends to have more idealistic and conservative views than her friends, and her love life is a long-term search for the "knight in shining armor" . She is Episcopalian for most of the series, but her love interests tend to be Jewish men. She eventually converts to Judaism. Miranda Hobbes is a Harvard-educated lawyer from Philadelphia. She tends to be pragmatic and cynical in both her work environment and her romantic relationships. An unplanned pregnancy eventually has her adjusting to motherhood, which she finds difficult to balance with her demanding career. Samantha Jones is the oldest member of the group, and had had a successful public relations executive. She is assertive, independent, and unapologetically open about her sexuality. For most of her life, Samantha preferred sex without emotional involvement. She struggles with the idea of long-term relationships, and she does not want to appear emotionally vulnerable. She is somewhat surprised that she has genuine feelings for some of her lovers, and that some of them feel genuine affection or loyalty for her.
